what is schizophrenia like?

Luminesce: A recent time we talked about schizophrenia - (edited)

(From my tulpa Tewi)
Schizophrenia can definitely make tulpamancy hard. Tulpamancy requires you to be invested in purely mental phenomena, but doing that with schizophrenia may very well open you up to being hurt. Tulpas aren't automatically immune and separate from it, unfortunately. You have to know for yourself whether you can balance control and immersion in tulpamancy to a point that it's still a positive experience, or if the practice will just be an overall net negative for you. (We have seen a good number of people with schizophrenia on both ends of this, some not seeming to experience much trouble at all, and others who we were very worried about practicing tulpamancy)

Basically, for anyone with a disorder that gives them trouble telling real from imaginary or difficulty in controlling the goings-on of their own minds, tulpamancy is generally not recommended.

Well, before i was medicated, i was still in the early stages so it wasn't super bad for me But basically, i'd hear people saying my name, random radio static, and lots of music I also believed people were like, trying to conspire to hate me I'd also see people in the shadows Later, i started getting really tired and these days even though most hallucinations and all delusions are gone, i still have what are called 'negative symptoms' which means i'm tired a lot, have trouble being happy, and have a lot of trouble with motivation and volition

Ahh ok Makes sense
Avatar
Luminesce: "Negative symptoms" are generally not dangerous in tulpamancy at all, as long as we aren't talking "Lack of critical thinking" or something lol (edited)
Avatar
Ah yeah my critical thinking is still intact luckily
Avatar
The potential danger of tulpamancy for people with mental disorders is that it inherently requires investment in internal (imagined) experiences, and if you're susceptible to uncontrolled, chaotic, or otherwise harmful or stressful thoughts, your tulpa - who you are now invested in - is not immune to these. And so that attachment can open you up to being hurt, where you might've had an easier time ignoring those thoughts were you not practicing tulpamancy.
1:14 AM
Does that make sense?

Yeah that makes sense

what are hallucinations/delusions like?
1:15 AM
are delusions similar to a stronger version of a "feeling" about something?
Avatar
Luminesce: If you're susceptible to "The {negative entities} are hurting my tulpa!"-type thoughts, that's an instance of tulpamancy actively making your life experience worse. And whether or not the sort of mental lucidity to prevent that is there differs from case to case with schizophrenia. (edited)
Avatar
I've already gotten contact with my tulpa though and he seems... pretty harmless I don't want to just make him disappear Maybe i should've thought about this more before starting

berockly (TTG) 3/15/2023 1:16 AM
well, i know what hallucinations are like, i have them when i wake up sometimes

and used to have intense auditory ones

Yeah it was like a really strong feeling that certain things were true and logic didn't work

are the hallucinations like out of the corner of your eye or blatant in vision ones

I got both Most of the time it was more out of the corner of my eye but on worse days it would be more like i was directly looking at it

But if you can, that's imagination
Avatar
berockly (TTG) 3/15/2023 1:29 AM
well you are objectively seeing it as rel in the case of imposing
1:29 AM
but the difference is that you dont percieve it as such
Avatar
Imposition is a skill that intends to blur the line, but yes, technically imposition should remain differentiable from reality in some way.
Avatar
berockly (TTG) 3/15/2023 1:30 AM
anyways, it would be slowly more and more vivid as i got more afraid
Avatar
Optimal imposition is experiencing your intended imposed senses as real, but also knowing that they aren't.
1:31 AM
And for the record, imposition is an even bigger no-go for anyone with schizophrenia than tulpamancy in general.
1:31 AM
Not to mention antipsychotics often make imposition harder or impossible anyways (as they should) (edited)
Avatar
Ah ok Should i not try imposition then? I still sorta want to keep developing my tulpa because i'm pretty attached to him already but
Avatar
I can't recommend practicing imposition to anyone officially diagnosed with schizophrenia.

berockly (TTG) 3/15/2023 1:34 AM
imposition is different from tulpamancy itself, its just a thing some tulpamancers want to do
1:35 AM
like luminesce said, if you have schizophrenia, learning to hallucinate easier is not helpful
Avatar
Luminesce: As for practicing tulpamancy at all - The people I've seen with schizophrenia who were hurt by tulpamancy, at some point ended up believing either 1, that their tulpa had control over them or intended to hurt them, or 2, that their tulpa was able to be hurt by another entity in their mind. If you think you could ever believe either of those two things, I recommend against practicing tulpamancy. If you think your clarity of mind is good enough to never believe in those things even if they seemed to be the case, then it's probably okay. (edited)
Avatar
Well Even when my delusions existed I was still able to be calmed down by my mom or friends And i still mostly believed they weren't true even though it felt true I think... i will be fine My negative symptoms always affected me more than the positive ones, and my positive symptoms were pretty benign anyways
Avatar
And yeah, imposition is a purely optional skill, as are switching and possession. You can fully practice tulpamancy without ever touching any of those.
1:40 AM
(For others' reference, "positive" symptoms are ones that are "added on" to your experience - like hallucinations, invasive thoughts and so on. "Negative" symptoms are a lack of something that should be there, like loss of motivation, loss of focus, and so on)

i know this is a very silly thing to say, and insensitive as well, but continue trying to convince yourself that your delusions are delusions and not real
1:41 AM
if a "outside entity" hurts your tulpa, just know the entity isnt real, and your tulpa isnt actuallyhurt

berockly (TTG) 3/15/2023 1:44 AM
yeah, idk, just write some baseline things down like a list you can look at maybe
1:45 AM
and if you have recurring delusions, make sure to add them to the list so that way when you have them you have an "anchor" to help tether you to reality
1:45 AM
(i know nothing about schizophrenia, but maybe that would help some0

Best to leave that kind of help to a professional psychiatrist or therapist, who does know about schizophrenia.
Avatar
Yeah It sounds like a good idea but i'll ask my psychiatrist
Avatar
Luminesce: Professional responses to tulpamancy vary a ton by the person, though if I were a professional, I would tell you to steer far away from it lol. (edited)
1:47 AM
I'm just giving advice as a tulpamancy expert, not a mental illness expert.
1:49 AM
If you want to try to convince them, then relay that I said what I did about people who I've seen practice tulpamancy with schizophrenia, namely that those who struggle to differentiate hallucinations or invasive thoughts from reality tend to experience problems, while those with clear and lucid thinking tend to not. (edited)
1:50 AM
(I wouldn't get your hopes up, though - it's like 50/50 bringing tulpamancy up to a therapist in general without schizophrenia or psychosis)
Avatar
If i told him about talking to someone in my head he'd probably just up my meds so i don't think i want to risk that if i don't need a med increase

Hi. I want to know if I'm doing tulpamancy correctly or not... I have a tulpa, Hevera, and she is able to move, communicate fluidly, and have emotions on her own (or on her own enough). However, I don't have head pressures, I don't audibly hear her voice, and I didn't teach her how to speak. She just seemed to sprout with an advanced consciousness that I might've given her, if that's even possible. It's been about a week or two, and I'm already at this phase. Is she a tulpa, or am I just imagining?

I never got any headpressures either. I’d say I was around that spot around that time
12:52 AM
also you don’t actually hear their voice. You hear them in the same way you can hear your own thoughts

Different people progress with tulpamancy at different speeds. 1-2 weeks seems reasonable.

Don't worry about whether or not you're faking it. You most likely aren't, faking is a conscious effort.

I never got head pressure either, and my tulpa was created by just talking to him I also don't hear his voice clearly yet, it sounds like a combination of my voice and his I think it's normal I was able to create him in 2 days, so it's not out of the question that you could create one within a week

Some people take months, or even years to develop a tulpa. Other people can do it instantly. How fast it takes you personally doesn't really impact how real your experience is, yeah.
